The First Baptist Church of Moorestown is a Member church of the Association of Welcoming & Affirming Baptists (www.wabaptists.org)

"Members of the Association of Welcoming & Affirming Baptists (AWAB) are churches, organizations, and individuals who are willing to go on record as welcoming and affirming all persons without regard to sexual orientation or gender identity, and who have joined together to advocate for the full inclusion of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender persons within Baptist communities of faith. Our unique makeup helps make AWAB The National Voice for LGBT Baptists."(AWAB Vision Statement)

Beginning in 2006 and continuing in 2007, the church began an intense review of the issues surrounding sexual orientation and its compatibility with a life of Christian Faith. We conducted a series of seminars and discussion groups, using a variety of sources, reference materials, and outside speakers. We examined 1)first and foremost, the Biblical and Spiritual issues, 2)its impact on our Church family, 3)its impact on our relationship with our local community, and 4)its impact on our relationship with the larger American Baptist organizations to which we belong. In June of 2007 our congregation voted overwhelmingly to embrace the principles of AWAB, and to join its ranks.

Throughout its history since the mid-1800's, First Baptist Church of Moorestown has been a progressive voice in the issues of the day, always being guided by belief in the principles of, and in salvation through faith in Jesus Christ. We have opposed slavery, supported women's suffrage, stood for civil rights, and prayed for peace and the end of military conflicts. Now we have addressed another important issue, always being guided by a careful reading of Scripture.

"We envision that the day may speedily come within Baptist Churches when no one shall feel excluded from God's love in Jesus Christ because of their sexual orientation and gender identity."
